The Doors of Fira

Fira, the capital city of Santorini. Santorini’s name originally comes from the patron saint of the Venetian crusaders, Saint Irene. Another popular adopted name that many locals still refer to is Thira, or Thera (named after a ruler from Sparta).

When you arrive in Fira and stroll down on the main square, what sprung out of the picture is not just the gorgeous views down to the caldera and the beautiful pastel-coloured buildings clinging to the rugged cliffs. It’s the doors.

At first sight, I thought—What’s that door doing there? And that one as well? Oh wait. There’s many of them! Haha

I think they are very charming and very typical for Fira. Something you cannot find anywhere else in the world, except here. The doors actually lead you down to a hotel, a cafe, or a restaurant that is usually cropped out of the rock cliffs.

On second thought, the doors look like art objects. Don’t you think?
